Wilmington & Western Railroad in Delaware is a historic rail line that goes back 140 years. Vintage trains offer family friendly excursions to delight kids and adults.

Vintage train excursions are a unique experience that is a fun event for the entire family. History comes to life in the historic state of Delaware on the Wilmington and Western Railroad. Historic train rides through the New England countryside are a step back into another era.

The golden age of railroading was a time when trains were the most efficient mode of transportation for freight and passengers. Travel by train was glamorous and romantic, as people traveled through the scenic wilderness of the countryside.

Wilmington & Western travels through the scenic Delaware countryside, with beautiful sights seen only from the train. Highlights along the route include Brandywine Springs Park, Red Clay Creek, Barley Mill Horse Stables, Mu. Cuba Picnic Grove, Ashland, Yorklyn an Hockessin.

Ride the Historic Railroad

Wilmington and Western travels along rolling streams, wooded forests and across open meadows. The scenic ride is on authentic vintage rail equipment, powered by historic locomotives, representing 140 years of railroad history.

The railroad has served communities along the Red Clay Creek since 1867, with passenger and freight service. Present day passenger excursions are powered by historic steam locomotives or vintage diesel locomotives.

Steam Locomotives

  • 1907 0-6-0 Switcher #58 built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1907
  • 2-6-0 Mogul #92 built by Canadian Locomotive Company in 191
  • 4-4-0 American #98 built in 1837

Diesel Locomotives

  • Locomotive No. 114 built by Electro-Motive Corporation 1940
  • SW 8408 built by Electro-Motive Corporation in 1940
  • The Paul Revere Doodlebug #4662 built by Pullman Standard in 1929.

Passenger Cars

  • Combine 410 open platform steel combination car built in 1914 by Pullman in Buffalo
  • Open Air Coach 442 open air car built in 1912
  • Coaches 571 &581 built in 1914 by Pullman Company
  • Coach 603 open platform steel coach built in 1915 by Pullman Company

Cabooses

  • Caboose C149 built in 1941 by Erie Railroad's Dunmore shops
  • Caboose C2013 built by Baltimore & Ohio in 1926
  • Caboose C2042 built in Baltimore & Ohio in 1926

Train Rides and Special Events

Wilmington & Western Railroad offers a regular schedule of scenic train rides and numerous special events. Mt. Cuba Express is a one and a half hour round trip rides to Mt. Cuba Picnic Grove. Hockessin Express is a a two and half hour round trip ride to Hockessin, DE.

  • Dinner trains include the Back Burner Ride-to-Dine, Hunter's Den Ride-to-Dine, On-Board Dinner Train and Valentine's Day Dinner Train.
  • Holiday Trains include the Autumn Leaf Special fall foliage ride, Easter Bunny Express, Fireworks Express or Fourth of July, Halloween Express, Holiday Nights Express for the Christmas Season, Santa Claus Express and the Veterans' Day Celebration.
  • Family Fun Trains include the Community Appreciation Day, Full Moon Hayride, Ghost Tours with Delaware Ghost Tours, Pufferbelley Days, Speeder Days, Wild West Robbery and Yorklyn Local for Fourth of July.
